General SKAI Meeting
Present: Sheralyn Smith (presiding), Jackie Wise, Amy Lyle, Lisa Harrison, Stacie Filley, Camilla EuDaley, Claire Ashby,
Richard Stark, Chris Wind, Brooke Corley, Nicole Dale, Kim Austin, Ron Symansky, Darryl Luton
ASL Fun Night - March 4th, 7-9 p.m. at the Olathe Club for the Deaf. It was requested that those planning to attend to
bring snacks. Reminder that next month, ASL Fun Night will be April 1st, 7-9 p.m. at the Olathe Club for the Deaf.
Bake Sale - March 27 and 28th, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Sheralyn will coordinate. Volunteers are still needed for manning the table,
making gift jars, and making other food to sell.
Notification of "Growing your 'Gloss'ary" Workshop being held in Lawrence, Saturday, March 4th, 9 a.m.-12 p.m.
Need to know if people are able to attend or not. If there is not enough interest, the workshop will be postponed.
Fundraiser - Possible Social Event/Fundraiser through Johnny's Tavern at 13410 W. 62nd Terrace, Shawnee, KS (located off
of Shawnee Mission Pkwy & Pflumm). 20% of all Food Sales will be donated to SKAI. Claire Ashby will check with the manager
of Johnny's to see what nights are available. General discussion was held and it was decided that at Tuesday or Thursday night
would work best for the event. This action item will be brought up again at the next SKAI officer meeting. It was noted by
Darryl Luton that in order to publicize the event in the Olathe Club for the Deaf newsletter, the deadline is March 31st.
Other Fundraiser possibilities to be thinking about for next fall include selling calendars that promote Deaf awareness.
A suggestion was made to have fundraisers over the summer, (i.e. - silent car wash) as a way to raise money but also stay
connected as a class and to continue practicing ASL.
SKAI T-shirts - There was general discussion, and the floor was opened up for a vote to decide if the logo would be the
SKAI logo or another design was required that would appeal to people other than just SKAI members. The voted passed to stay
with the orginial SKAI T-shirt design.
Kansas Association of Interpreters Statewide Conference -
Held at the Capitol Plaza Hotel in Topeka, March 10-12. General discussion was held as to whether or not SKAI would have
a table in the Exhibit Hall. Cost for the table is $30. It might be possible to share a table with JCCC Interpreter Training
Program and split the cost. Sheralyn would still need to check with Stacey Storme to see if that would be possible. General
discussion was held as to who would man the table since it appeared that most of the people planning to attend the conference
are volunteering as student reps and may not be available to sit at the table. It was suggested to make the table self sufficient
and have fliers to explain what SKAI is and how it is connected with KAI. Additional fliers could be displayed advertising
the April 1st ASL Fun Night. Camilla volunteered to have the fliers organized for the table. Sheralyn would see to the reservation
of the table.
Yearbook Committee, Richard Stark representative, indicated that he would be bringing in some disposable cameras. More
pictures are needed for the yearbook.
Meeting was adjourned.
